GAM Cultural Center Guide
GAM: Santiago's Vibrant Hub for Arts and Culture Guide
The Gabriela Mistral Cultural Center, or GAM, is a dynamic and modern cultural complex located in the heart of Santiago. It's a must-visit for anyone interested in contemporary Chilean art, performance, and social discourse. GAM offers a diverse program of events, exhibitions, and workshops, making it a lively and engaging space for both locals and tourists. The center aims to promote artistic expression, foster critical thinking, and provide a platform for diverse voices within Chilean society. GAM's history is intertwined with Chile's political past. Originally built in 1972 as the headquarters for the Third United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD III), the building was later used by the military government after the 1973 coup. It was renamed the Diego Portales Building and served as a symbol of the dictatorship. In 2006, the building was transformed into the Gabriela Mistral Cultural Center, reclaiming its space as a center for art and culture, honoring the Nobel Prize-winning Chilean poet. Visitors to GAM can enjoy a wide range of activities. Explore the various exhibition spaces showcasing visual arts, photography, and design. Attend a theater performance, dance show, or musical concert in one of the center's performance halls. Participate in workshops and talks on various cultural topics. Relax in the outdoor plaza, which often hosts free events and performances. GAM also has a bookstore and a cafe where you can grab a bite to eat or a coffee. While GAM doesn't have a specific culinary tradition, the cafe offers a selection of Chilean and international dishes.
